"Ramshackle Road" - Lyrics and Music

About the song

This song was written in the Christmas of 2009. It's a proper love ballad with piano accompaniment, plenty of strings and the backing vocals are layered on like a royal wedding cake. The song was written about a friend of mine whose 10 year relationship was coming to an end - and in between the tears and emotions the song emerged. I recorded it 2 months later - and it was the last track to be written for the Nations Pride album. The first rendition though - without any strings or backing vocals - sounded rough! Gaz remarked that it was something like a damaged Shane Macgowan record... So in the end most of the studio time was spent layering strings (3 yamaha fiddles) and Gaz adding 3 backing vocals to support the chorus. In the end it's turned out to be one of the best songs on the album.

Lyrics

In the beginning it was fine
I was yours and you were mine
Every day was valentines
Kisses, red roses and wine
But before to long had come to pass
It was clear our love couldn't last
And like the snow on lifes long path
It melted in the rain

So let it go, let it go babe
and let tonight, be the last time
we ever go,
with broken hearts,
down that long old ramshackle road called love

If only we'd taken the time
The time to let out young hearts fly
Maybe our love would have survived
Maybe we could have rescued the dream
We used to call each other special names
User to play those lovers games
I can't believe it's all gone away
I can't believe a thing

(chorus)
