"RoadKill" - Lyrics and Music

About the song

I was travelling in someone elses car one day when we saw an animal by the side of the road and the driver remarked 'its just another roadkill'. That was the beginning of the song but it quickly became apparent that the remark was really just reflective of a general attitude in our society to accept unecessary destruction of our environment. "There's nothing we can do about it - it's just how it is" - which is pretty disgraceful really... so the song ended up being about that. Our attitude towards animals killed at the side of the road is just another extension of our more general approach to nature.

The middle 8 was taken from a different environmental FolkLaw song, which wasn't coming together so well. It started:

"There's something in this world which is going to have to give way"
"Give way to the pressures that we put upon it, day after day"
"We're laying down the roads and digging up the trees"
... then something about... "polluting the air we breathe"

The lyrics in the chorus which followed now form the middle 8 of this song.

Lyrics

Carbon emissions don't seem so grey
In the black and white of the stock exchange
If the price is up at the end of the day
No one will care for the acid rain
And if recycling it'll cost a pound
Go and bury it, deep into the ground
We can always dig it up someday
Send it in to outer space. Yes, in to outer space

It's just another RoadKill
Trapped under the wheels of a car
Driven through this life of ours
Plughing a furrow, through the lives of tomorrow
With total disregard for the world
With total disregard for the world

Fill the ground with chemicals
So we can grow more cereals
And modify their DNA
to make them grow a 'better' way
It don't matter if they taste bland
We can add some pre-packed sauce and
Package them up in a tin can
And live of the land. Yes, 'live of the land'

(chorus)

But it's all right we'll make a start tomorrow
There's plenty of time to turn a leaf
We can't see the end, so lets just pretend
What will be, will be
And the governments promises are hollow
Filled with an arrogant belief
They can't see the end, so lets just pretend
What will be, will be.

(chorus)
