"Over a Line" - Lyrics and Music

About the song

This song grew out of the chords, and it was one of the last to be written on the FolkLaw album - I wanted something in G and started strumming a steady rhythm. The first line followed from that because it fitted with the steady pace... and in the back of my mind I still hear a marching snare drum style. The rest of the lyrics followed over a couple of days - my Grandad died in the 2nd World War, leaving my grandma and her three kids alone in Ipswich. My own dad also died when I was young. The song grew to reflect the waste of people dying unecessarily and the effect it has on people close to them. This song is one of my favorites.

Lyrics

A rifle fired across the trench line
A soldier died over a line
A mother cried until she was empty of tears
She aged years over a line
And an orphaned child's father lays
In a ploughed field without a grave
And over time he'll be led astray
Without his hero to guide the way

Over a line, Over a line
All over a line, Over a line

In the fields where the red flowers grow
Lay memories of the war-zone
A letter wrote, but never sent home
To a lover who can never know
Of each and every scar, of life in the rain
Of all the lives they lost and all the lives they saved
In a war that should never have been waged
A disagreement over a line

Over a line
All over a line
Just over a line
Over a line
